How To Choose A Good Name For Your Business

This is one roadblock that most new entrepreneurs run into,  A good business name should portray the message to the customer just like the color of your business.

Remember this post: Judging the book by its cover:

I can remember how stressful the naming process was for me when launching both my blog and my business.

For my blog I spend about a week drawing a long list, all the names that I wanted were taken.

The process was so depressing I ended up letting the computer suggest a wrong spelled one for me.

The computer suggested top succssess in place of top success.  After two years I realized that this wrong spelling is affecting traffic to my blog as people search success, not succssess.  After changing it  I saw a lot of difference in traffic.

Now you can see how important it was to change my blog address into a word that makes sense.  Traffic!

Choosing a good  business name can be frustrating

Choosing a name for your business can be so difficult that you end up naming your business something that does not represent it.

A negative one can kill your business while a positive one can influence the success of your business.

Guidelines when choosing  a good  business name

These are the questions that you can ask yourself when deciding a name for your business.

  • What message do you want to send through your business?
  • Do you want it to be easy to pronounce and directly related to your products?
  • Do you want a long or short name?
  • What will people feel when they say your business name?
  • Do you want it to be named after you?
  • Study the names of your competitors.  Do you want to be different?
  • Consider your business structure for example Pty, Ltd?
  • Do you want a descriptive name?

Some experts believe that any name can be effective if backed up by an effective marketing strategy

I stand to differ with them. I believe it should communicate. It should reinforce the key elements of your business. This will also save your effort when it comes to explaining your business as the name has already done most of the work. imagine marketing a business selling fish called Mangos.

You will do a lot of explaining to make people understand why it is called Mangoes’ a lot of customers will come there for mangoes, not for fish. This is a true example.

Apparently, the owner is called Mango. And that is where it comes from.  The sign outside is so weird,  It shows a picture of a fish,  written “ Mango” on top.

Mistakes to avoid

Using your city region or country as part of your company name. this might help in the beginning but will soon become a hindrance to the company growth.

Avoid unusual spellings. Sometimes we use unusual spellings because the one  we want has been taken.

The computer suggests something similar to the one you want but with one letter missing a good example is my case succssess instead of success.

This was very difficult when I refer people to my site as I have to stress that it is not a normal spelling of success. I sometimes write it on paper for them but still, they will write the normal success and be referred to the wrong site

This is  selection is often an overwhelming, frustrating, and exhausting experience. However, you have to try your best to get it right as this is crucial to your business.
